I want to make and sell kids clothes, maternity wear, costumes, and mens suits. Dont I need a serger machine?
...in order to have a professional, finished look? Would people buy any of these clothes if they weren't serged to prevent freying? Do I have to pay 300 bucks for a serger? Are they always that expensive?
But if my clothes are serged then don't I increase the chance of a sell by about 70% ? Do I need to serge Halloween costumes, will people still buy them?
Could I use Stitch Witchery tape to fuse the raw edges as a low cost alternitative while waiting to buy a serger?
You asked "Dont I need a serger machine?" Not necessarily -- there are other ways of finishing seams, including flat felled and French. However, sergers are faster and easier. Lining is another option.
You do know that you can't sell clothes made from a commercial pattern like Simplicity/Butterick/McCall/Vogue without violating their license terms and probably getting at least a lawyer letter, and perhaps having to pay damages, right? http://www.sewgirls.com/sewing/Patterns-3976-.htm
You asked "Do I have to pay 300 bucks for a serger? Are they always that expensive?" A $300 home serger isn't likely to hold up well for long if you're sewing several hours a day. And you void warranty on home machines by using them for business. If you're going to go for a home serger used in business, look at the Juki line -- they're about the sturdiest of the home sergers, and reasonably priced for what they are.
Stitch witchery: just say no.
Stay away from kid's clothes until you understand what the full impact of CPSIA is. http://www.fashion-incubator.com/category/cpsia/ The whole fashion-incubator.com site is very useful.
